Auto locksmiths
An auto locksmith specialises in vehicles: opening cars with the keys locked inside, and cutting and programming replacement keys and fobs.
Keys locked in the car
Auto locksmiths use specialist tools to open most vehicles without damage. Breakdown cover sometimes includes this, so check your policy before paying.
Lost or broken car keys
Modern keys contain a transponder chip that must be programmed to the car's immobiliser, and many have a remote fob as well. A mobile auto locksmith can usually cut and programme a new key at the roadside for most common makes, often for less than a main dealer and without the car needing to be recovered. If all keys are lost, it is worth having the old ones removed from the car's memory so they no longer start it.
What to have ready
- the registration number, make, model and year;
- proof of ownership (the V5C logbook) and photo ID, which a reputable auto locksmith will ask for;
- any remaining key, even a broken one.
Faulty fobs and ignition problems
Fobs that have stopped working sometimes only need a battery or a new case, which a key-cutting shop can do cheaply. Worn ignition barrels and broken keys stuck in the ignition are also auto locksmith jobs.
