Locksmith FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask most about locks, lockouts and locksmiths.

I'm locked out. What should I do first?

Check every door and window you might have left unlocked, and whether anyone else has a key. If not, call a local locksmith and ask for the total price and whether they will try non-destructive entry first. Most standard domestic locks can be opened without damage by a skilled locksmith. If a child or vulnerable person is locked inside, or there is a risk to life, call 999.

What is an anti-snap lock, and do I need one?

Most uPVC and composite doors use a euro cylinder lock. Older or cheap cylinders can be snapped at a weak point and opened in seconds, a method burglars use widely. Anti-snap cylinders have a sacrificial section that breaks away while the locking part stays in place. Look for cylinders tested to TS007 3 star, or a 1-star cylinder paired with 2-star security handles. A locksmith can fit one in well under an hour.

Should I change the locks when I move house?

Yes. Previous owners, tenants, builders, cleaners and neighbours may all have keys. Changing the cylinders on the external doors is quick and inexpensive, and it is the right time to upgrade to anti-snap cylinders.

My uPVC door won't lock. Is it the lock?

Often it is the multi-point mechanism or the door alignment rather than the cylinder. If the handle is stiff or will not lift fully, the door may have dropped, or the gearbox inside the door may be failing. A locksmith can adjust the hinges and keeps, or replace the gearbox or the whole mechanism. Don't force the handle, as that can break the gearbox completely.

Can a lock be rekeyed instead of replaced?

Some lock types can be rekeyed so old keys stop working, but with euro cylinders it is usually as cheap, and more secure, to replace the cylinder. A locksmith can advise on the specific lock.

I've lost my car keys. Do I have to go to the dealer?

Not usually. Many auto locksmiths can cut and programme replacement keys and remote fobs for most makes, often at the roadside and for less than a main dealer. Have the vehicle registration and proof of ownership ready. See our guide to auto locksmiths.

What locks does my home insurance require?

Many policies require locks that meet British Standard BS 3621 on wooden external doors, and key-operated locks on accessible windows. Check your policy wording, because a claim can be reduced if the required locks were not fitted or not used.

How much does a locksmith cost?

It depends on the job, the region and the time of day. Our guide to choosing a locksmith gives rough ranges for lockouts, cylinder changes and repairs, and explains how to avoid being overcharged.

Can a locksmith open a safe?

Specialist safe engineers can open most safes, change combinations and service locks. Not every locksmith does safe work, so ask first. See safe engineers.

How do I become a locksmith?

Most UK locksmiths start with a short practical course, then build skills through practice and experience. See our guide to locksmith training.
